Tips to Keep in Mind When Choosing Breast Implants
Breast augmentation can be a positive, life-changing procedure, but it is also a serious surgery. Therefore, the decision to undergo treatment should not be taken lightly. Also, there are many decisions to make regarding breast implants, including which type, shape and size to get. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing breast implants.
Breast Implant Type
There are three main types of breast implants currently available on the market: saline implants, traditional silicone implants and highly cohesive silicone gel implants. Ultimately, your choice of implant will be based on your anatomical needs and personal preferences. The following are some of the advantages and potential drawbacks of each type to help you make your decision.
Saline. This type of implant is filled with a sterile saltwater solution, so the body can safely absorb the filling material in case of an implant rupture. This in itself is the deciding factor for many women. Saline implants are also the most economical option. However, they are more prone to rippling within the implant pocket, and tend to be visible underneath the skin’s surface, especially in women with thin skin or little body fat.
Traditional Silicone. Traditional silicone implants are less likely to fold or wrinkle within the implant pocket. For this reason, they are typically a good choice for women with thin skin and / or little body fat, as they are less likely to be visible underneath the surface of the skin. Also, they look and feel most like natural breast tissue. Nonetheless, the body cannot absorb the silicone filling material, which usually stays intact in or near the implant pocket if an implant leak or rupture occurs. This makes it difficult to detect whether there is a problem with the implant. Also, silicone implants are a bit more expensive than saline implants, and require a slightly larger incision for insertion.
Highly Cohesive Silicone. This newest-generation silicone implant is filled with a form-stable, highly cohesive silicone gel material. This means that the filling material stays intact, even when cut in half. For this reason, this type of implant is highly unlikely to fold or wrinkle within the implant pocket. Also, highly cohesive silicone gel implants are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including an anatomically correct teardrop shape.
Breast Implant Size
When choosing an implant size, it’s best to pick the size that’s right for you. That may seem like an obvious statement, but it’s easy to compare oneself with other women. The reality is, what works on a woman with a larger body frame and perhaps a higher body fat percentage will not look the same on a petite woman with little body fat and thin skin. For instance, a petite woman who chooses extremely large breast implants with a wide base will most likely look “top heavy.” Therefore, when looking at other women with breasts that you desire, make sure you choose women with similar body types and frames as you.
