Recent Advancements in Cosmetic Surgery

Plastic surgery technology and approaches are ever-evolving. That is why it is crucial to choose a cosmetic surgeon who stays up to date with the latest advancements in the industry. Vancouver plastic surgeon Benjamin Gelfant MD is one such individual. He is dedicated to staying abreast of innovations in his field. Here, he reviews one of the most important recent advancements in cosmetic surgery.

Fat Transfer to the Breasts and Face

For decades, patients have been asking questions such as, “Doctor, why can’t you just take some of this buttock fat and use it to enhance my breasts?”

Until recently, fat transfer to the breast was condemned as unsafe practice, but thanks to advancements in fat transfer techniques, namely in the way that harvested fat cells are purified before being re-injected into another area of the body, fat transfer (also called fat grafting and natural fat transfer) is now a viable option for cosmetic enhancement.

A recent article in Plastic Surgery News describes how fat transfer to the breast has gone quickly from being thought of as unsafe, to being accepted and widely used. Dr. Gelfant has used fat transfer in limited ways, mostly in the face and for treatment of post-liposuction deformities, since starting in his practice in 1989. Since attending the University of Toronto annual symposium on aesthetic surgery in May 2013, Dr. Gelfant has been actively involved in using this exciting advancement in plastic surgery.

With fat transfer, Benjamin Gelfant MD uses liposuction to remove fat from an area of the body with a surplus of fat cells, purifies it, and then transfers it to another area of the body requiring enhancement or added volume. He can naturally augment the breasts to a certain degree, using your own fat. He can also use your own fat to fill in facial lines or enhance the cheeks and other areas of the body.

The following case shows a woman before and nine months after breast lift with inverted nipple treatment and fat transfer for upper-pole fullness. The patient did not want implants. To schedule a personal consultation with Benjamin Gelfant MD or to learn more about advancements in your cosmetic surgery treatment options, please contact Broadway Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Centre by calling (604) 874-2078.
